  The Aberlour distillery lies in the heart of the Spey valley. Officially founded by James Fleming, the long history of distillation at the site goes back further, to at least 1826, the name Aberlour is Gaelic for the mouth of the babbling brook.

• BENROMACH

  The Benromach distillery in Forres was constructed in 1898 by a partnership between Duncan McCallum (owner of the Glen Nevis distillery in Campbeltown) and F. W Brockman (A spirit merchant from Leith in Edinburgh). The distillery was officially opened in 1900 but closed again soon after. It was revived again shortly after World War I, but the distillery fell silent again in 1931. Benromach was the first distillery in Scotland to install direct oil firing under their stills. It was bought and sold numerous times, before finally officially being re-opened by Prince Charles of Wales.

  The Benriach distillery is located near Elgin in the ‘Lossie’ part of Speyside. It lies in between the Linkwood and Longmorn distilleries. It was built in 1898 by John Duff, who had built the Longmorn distillery earlier that year. A man who knew what he was doing when it comes to making whisky.

• BENRINNES

  Benrinnes distillery was built in 1826 and then completely destroyed by a flood in 1829. In 1955 it was completely rebuilt 1955, and in 1974 the distillery switched to a system of ‘partial triple distillation’. It is also one of the few distilleries to still use ‘worm tubs’ to cool the vapors and condensed spirit from the running stills. This feature was once common, but not anymore.

• CRAGGANMORE

  The Cragganmore distillery was built in 1869 by one John Smith, who had previously been involved with the Glenfarclas, Macallan and Glenlivet distilleries. Cragganmore was destroyed and rebuilt in 1902. The name is Gaelic for ‘great rock’. John Smith ordered the construction of a railroad station when he built the distillery, and it became the first distillery in Scotland to transport their whisky efficiently by railway.

• GLENBURGIE

  Glenburgie Distillery was founded in 1810 under the name Kilnflat. In 1870, the distillery closed down and reopened in 1878 under the name Glenburgie - Glenlivet. The following years were marked by many changes in the ownership and periods of inactivity, until the 1930s, when Hiram Walker Co. took over. From then onwards, the production started again and ever since Glenburgie has been a fundamental part of the Ballantine’s blended whiskies. Only a few official bottles have been release in the past two decades, but occasionally some Glenburgie single casks are bottled by independent bottlers.

  Glen grant may not seem like such a big brand as say Bowmore or Springbank, however it is actually the third largest malt producer in Scotland, right after Glenfiddich and Macallan. It is located in the small town of Rothes in the main Speyside whisky region, one of the top selling whisky regions in the world.

  Glendronach was founded in 1826 by James Allardes. Just after a decade it was destroyed in a fire (commonplace for many distilleries at the time). This was important, as producing and selling whisky was strictly illegal until this point, however it was operating heavily in the country.   The first of the two Linkwood distilleries was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown. Therefore, founded when distilling was still technically illegal. However production did not actually start until four years later. Brown’ son inherited the distillery after being run by himself for over 50 years. He demolished it in 1869 to make room for a new and improved distillery, which then began in 1874. If you appreciate value, this is the one for you.

• STRATHISLA

  A number of people claim that Strathisla is the oldest, and continuously operating distillery in Scotland. It was founded in 1786 by George Taylor and Alexander Milne, under the name Milltown Distillery. The name was then changed to Strathisla, back to Milltown and finally backs to Strathisla. It then suffered from two devastating fires. The latter caused by an extreme dust explosion. It was rebuilt this time with its own bottling plant! If you like a good drama behind your dram, this is the one for you.

• ARDBEG

  The Ardbeg distillery lies on the south shore of Islay, close to the other ‘Kildalton’ distilleries (Lagavulin and Laphroaig). This coastline is home to some of the most extreme ‘peat monsters’. The style of the Kildalton malts often have the most organic flavors of the Island. Almost a third of the townsfolk worked at the distillery, founded in 1815. In those days the annual production exceed 300000 US gallons. Not too shabby for a little family factory.

  The Bowmore distillery was built on Islay in 1779 (so the marketeers claim). This would make Bowmore one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland. However the records are vague, so when the first Bowmore was actually distilled is hard to determine with 100% accuracy.

• BUNNAHABHAIN

  The Bunnahabhain distillery on Islay is located on the north of the island with Caol Ila as its only neighbor. Situated on the coast of the ‘sound’ of Islay, it is protected from the fierce winds blowing in from the Atlantic. It is the only non-peated Islay malt. It was first constructed in 1880, and has the largest capacity on the island. A great unpeated alternative if you like your island malts, but need a break from the ‘peat monster’.

  The bruichladdich distillery was the most westernmost distillery in Scotland, before Kilchoman was opened in 2005. They use one of an extremely lightly peated barley with only 2 PPM, and is one of only two dozen malt distilleries that were founded over a century ago, band have managed to survive to this day.

  Kilchoman was the first new distillery to be built on the remote island for well over a century. The driving force behind the distillery is Anthony Wills, who dreamt of being the smallest most traditional distillery in Scotland.   Lagavulin was founded in 1816 on the South shore of the Island by the entrepreneurial, John Johnston. Less than a decade later he also bought the neighboring Ardmore distillery (not to be confused with the armore distillery in Speyside). They stopped production at Ardmore in 1835, after which it was combined with Lagavulin. One of the most recognized names and flavors of the Island.

• PORT ELLEN

  Port Ellen distillery is located in its names sake on the island. It was established as a malt mill in 1825 and then into a distillery in 1833 until 1892. The warehouses still exist and are now listed buildings. It was rebuilt in 1967 and then closed again in 1983. Stocks are now owned by Diageo, but due to its closing and limited supplies it is now becoming more and more collectable.

  The Ardmore distillery is located in the far South East of the Speyside region, and is not the first distillery to carry the name. However the current one was built in 1898 by Adam Teacher. Even today, most of the whisky distilled there goes into the famous Teacher’s blend. Bottling of Ardmore as single malt are relatively rare.

  Ben Nevis is located off the beaten track of Inverness-shire. It is said to have been founded in 1825 by ‘Long John’ McDonald. After many changes in ownership it was bought again in 1955 and was installed with a Coffey Still, for the production of grain whisky as well. It was eventually bought by the Japanese Nikka Distillery in 1989 and reopened in 1991.

  The name of the Brora distillery actually used to be Clynelish, until the owners built a brand new Clynelish distillery across the road. It was built for the Marquess of Stafford in 1819, and was closed down in 1968. However, it would have remained so, had there not been an unexpected drought on the island of Islay. Brora was then chosen by Port Ellen distillery as an alternative ‘home grown’ whisky to use in some of their blends. However eventually in 1983 production ceased altogether. Another must try.

  The Dalmore distillery, located in north Inverness was founded in 1839, although the founder Alexander Matheson did not actually distill the whisky himself. It was leased and run by a family called the Sunderland’s. In 1874 its number of stills was increased from two to four, which was quite an exception in those days. However it was left in ruins after an explosion and a fire on site. Now however we are lucky enough to enjoy a new lease of life since Untied Spirits bought the brand in 2007.

• GLENGOYNE

  This distillery continuously in operation since its founding in 1833 at Dumgoyne, north of Glasgow, Scotland. Glengoyne is unique in producing Highland single malt whisky matured in the Lowlands. Located upon the Highland Line, the division between the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland, Glengoyne’s stills are in the Highlands while maturing casks of whisky rest across the road in the Lowlands. Unlike many malt whisky distilleries today, Glengoyne does not use peat smoke to dry their barley, but instead uses warm air.

  In 1843 the Morangie farm distillery was built by the Matheson brothers William and John. In comparison with Dalmore, Glenmorangie did not expand its number of still to four until 1980. However it was one of the few distilleries able to survive the whisky crisis in the 80s with flying colors, and expanded its stills again to a grand total of eight! This enables them to produce over four million liters of alcohol each year and is now a worldwide brand.

  One of the things that sets Oban apart from other distilleries is the fact that it is located in the middle of a busy town overlooking the harbor. It is the gateway to the Hebrides. It was actually built to provide jobs for the unemployed masses in 1937 until 1969. Its still house was then rebuilt, and has been continuously active since 1972. A subtle, but glorious dram in a unique location.

  Royal Lochnagar was built in 1826 by founder James Robertson. Three years earlier he had actually founded another distillery in Glen Feardan, however unfortunately it was burnt down by his competitors. He decided to build a new distillery near a mountain named Lochnagar. He must have been lacking in social skills as again this was burned down. A new distillery was constructed by John Begg in 1845, during the new reign of Queen Victoria. She visited Balmoral Castle for the first time in 1848, and the distillery folk impressed her so much they received a so-called ‘Royal Warrant’ in the same year. A dram of royal taste.

  Springbank, like Oban to the North, is one of the few distilleries in a small town rather than in lush countryside of Scotland. It lies on the Southern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula on the West coast. In its glory days, Campbeltown was known as ‘the whisky capital of the world’, however it fell fast from glory and all distilleries in the area were mothballed. Springbank has a unique salty flavor from its positioning and is a personal favorite of ours. Enjoying unique status as well as taste.

  The isle of Jura is located so close to the island of Islay that the often participate in its annual ‘Feis Ile’ whisky festival! Although so close to Islay it has its own unique style and flavor. Though they do produce peated batches, the most regular expressions show a trademark oily profile.

  In 1826 Highland Park received a license to distill whisky. Built by Robert Borwick, and then succeeded by his son George, it actually went on to be a less successful period in the distilleries history. Highland Park was then inherited by George’s younger brother, James. However, since James was a priest, his attitude towards the family trade was somewhat ambivalent. However it was eventually bought by James Grant of The Glen Grant Distillery, responding to the big Whisky boom of the late 19th Century. Despite being so far away in the Orkney Isles, and incredibly isolated, it has operated with four stills since 1898! A must try.

  Talisker was built in 1830 by brothers Kenneth and Hugh MacAskill, sons of the local doctor. Everything proceeded smoothly for two decades until the lease was passed to the North Bank of Scotland. Ownership changed continuously, and it was yet ANOTHER distillery to fall victim to a large fire. It is the only distillery on the island of Skye, another Hebridean island, and again has similar peated notes to Islay, however it does have its own rugged and delicious charm.

  A decade after being opened in 1995, a few different expressions of the Arran whisky became available to the public in 2005. The island is located in the firth of Clyde near to Campbeltown. For many years the only widely available expression was the NAS (no age statement) released for the first time in 1998. It is an extremely subtle flavor, not like those of the Hebrides. A preferred choice if peat is not your style.

• AUCHENTOSHAN

  Auchentoshan is one of the only three remaining (active) Lowland Malt Whisky Distilleries. Together with Bladnoch and Glenkinchie it managed to escape the fate of the fellow lowlander Inverleven Kinclaith, Linlithgow, Ladyburn, Littlemill and Rosebank. Founded in 1800 and located just North of Glasgow, Auchentoshan has an interesting feature, like other Lowland whiskies, it is triple distilled. In all other whisky regions, only double distillation takes place. The three wood is a must.

  Kavalan distillery is a Taiwanese whisky distillery. It is owned by the King Car Group, and is located at Yuanshan, a rural township in the western part of Yilan County, Taiwan. The distillery is named after the Kavalan people, indigenous natives, who originally inhabited the Kabalan Plain of modern-day Yilan County. The distillery was completed in December 2005, and its first bottling in December 2008. They do not believe in age statements due to the hot climate.
